I’ve discovered I have a habit of telling people how tired I am. Repeatedly. Even when I’m not actually tired. It’s really just a conversation filler because no matter who you talk to, chances are if you tell them how tired you are they’ll come right back at you and tell you that they’re ten times more tired than you. If that right there doesn’t express human nature, I don’t know what does. We even compete when it comes to who’s the most tired.

But, that’s not the point of this particular rant. Instead, I would like to focus on one conversation  I’ve had recently involving the above mentioned dialogue. I was sitting with a girl from my class while we were waiting for our next class to start and naturally, to fill the uncomfortable silence, I told her how tired I was.

With a dramatic sigh and an award-winning hair flip, she leaned forward to look at me.

“Oh. My. God. I knowwww right? I was up until like one in the morning!”

Pulling out a tube of some sort of crazy lip product and her phone to check her reflection in, she gave me that look. The one that says “Well, aren’t you just dying to know why? Of course you are! And if you don’t ask me right now, I will disown you as my friend. You will be dead to me.”

With a performance so impressive it should land me a job as a Hollywood actress, I asked her for  all the deets. I even managed to pull of the signature awed puppy dog eyes, I’m definitely ready for the big leagues.

She laughed and then flipped her hair again before continuing.

“Well, I was up like allllllllll night talking to this guy. It was so great, but, ugh! I’m so exhausted now!”

She looked at me again, this time it was more of an “aren’t you sooo jealous that I was talking to a guy all night? Psh, of course you are. What were you doing? Hah, probably having a dream about how you wish you were as great as I am.” (Which, by the way, is so not true! I was dreaming about… Crap! I can’t even remember! I swear I knew two seconds ago! Why does this always happen?!)

We both laughed and, me being the somewhat immature teen that I am, I elbowed her in the ribs and raised my eyebrows suggestively. Moments after, the bell rang and we moved on with our typical teenage girl lives.

Oh… So, that’s what ‘normal’ people do at night? Stay up talking to people?

Hmmm. Weird.

Personally, I’m more of the type of person who stays up until the craziest hours of the night because my thoughts just don’t have an off button. And being an aspiring writer, any thought or great idea is like a baby unicorn. Incredibly rare and virtually worthless until they grow into a majestic stallion with sparkly wings, a flowing rainbow mane, and a pure gold horn.

Ah, the life of a writer.

Baby unicorns are better than real relationships with people anyway.
